Bull's family

I have been searching and collecting materials about the Bulla/Bula family for a long time. Some of the findings are presented here, which I hope in the future will be developed by me in the form of a book dedicated to this family.

The spelling and etymology of the surname Bulla/Bula

Depending on the place and historical period, the surname was written in one of two ways. Until the middle of the 18th century, it was more often written as "Bula", after this period, it was more often written as "Bulla", and this is how it functions to this day. Although in the interwar period in the Polish part of Upper Silesia, as well as after 1945 In 1990, throughout Upper Silesia, it was administratively "Polonized" to the form "Bula".

Regardless of whether the surname is written as "Bula" or "Bulla", it has a common etymology. You can find out about it by referring to the studies of linguists:

a) prof. Kazimierz Rymut - Surnames of Poles: historical and etymological dictionary

Bula - in the group of surnames derived from bula, bule 'shoulder, bump', can of proto buliti 'obrzmiewać, swell; goggle, gwarowego of bula 'bull', also hurt, Bull 'decree'.

b) prof. Aleksander Brückner - Etymological dictionary of the Polish language

Bula, Formerly nodule (the Pope), hung from the seal nicknamed, pour. bulla, 'seal', 'bubble', 'bump'; hence the nodule, bread (from 15. w.), muffin (formerly a piece of bread), and bulb or bulba, on 'potatoes' from all kinds of 'roots' transferred.

c) prof. Andrzej Bańkowski – Etymological dictionary of the Polish language

Bulla - a solemn papal decree, XIX-1 (also Bula), instead, stp. bun 'ts' 1484, XVI-XVIII, double borrowing from Latin. Bull in the sense of a special (hung round seal of lead), anything at all round, in particular air bubble, water bubble, hence a circular amulet, worn around the neck, and a seal, by. On here. bubble, Spanish:. bubble, fr. bubble i boulle.

On the basis of the linguists' inquiries presented above, there are at least two equally probable etymologies of the surname Bula/Bulla:
a) firstly, it may be derived from the Latin word bulla, meaning something round, for example,. stamp, bubble or tumor. After the word was borrowed into the Old Polish language, it transformed into the form of bula.
b) secondly, the surname may come from a word common to all Indo-European languages, which in the Proto-Slavic language took the form of buliti and meant swelling, swelling or bulging of the eyes, and then it passed into the Old Polish language in the form of bula, while in other languages it evolved into the form bolla or bulla.

The oldest records of the surname Bulla/Bula in Upper Silesia

The name Bulla/Bula appears in Upper Silesia quite a long time ago. One of the oldest mentions comes from a document from 1527 year. At that time, Mikołaj, the owner of a free village council in the princely department in Lędziny, sold two departments of this village council for 90 zlotys for Mateusz Bula. The rest of this farm he sold 4 of December 1537 year to Stanisław Bulla (perhaps son of Mateusz). It was part of the community at that time 3 fields of the role, a pond in the village and a mill with one wheel under it, homestead under the mill forge pond, the right to brew and sell beer, as well as meat and bread butcheries. Between 1560, a 1572 In 1930, the gentlemen of Pszczyna bought this village and attached it to the Lędziński manor.

The Bull family from the Lubliniec region

The oldest records of the surname Bulla/Bula from the area of Lubliniec come from the record books of the Sadów parish. 12 brand 1677 Mateusz Bula from Olszyny was buried under the cross, who, while going to the ponds in Droniowice, fell and died suddenly. 7 May 1679 Jakub Bula from Boronów was buried in the church cemetery in Sadów, aged 18 54 years (born. ok. 1625 year), and 8 of December 1696 Mikołaj Bula, who died at the age of 18, was buried in the year 45 years (born. ok. 1651).

The oldest records of baptisms of people with the surname Bulla/Bula include those recorded under the date 25 April 1674 George's baptism, son of Bartłomiej Bula and Katarzyna from Rusinowice and the baptism of John, son of Jakub Bula and Zofia Szczesny from Boronów z 2 June 1675 year.

These metrics show, that the Bulla/Bula family lived in the area of the parish of Sadów and Boronów from the mid-17th century, and perhaps earlier, which can be evidenced by the genetic tests described in more detail below.

The Bulla family in the parish of Boronów

My oldest found ancestor is Wawrzyniec (Laurenty) Bulla (Bula) who lived at the beginning of the 18th century in Boronów. However, at the same time, several families with the same surname lived in the village. They form at least seven main lines of this family, which are derived from the following pairs:

a) Boronów – line of Melchior (b. right. ok. 1688)
10 brand 1720 Józef, the son of Melchior Bula and Maria Gomoluch, was baptized in 1930. This is the oldest record concerning the children of this couple that has been preserved in the record books in Boronów. Based on the information from the marriage records can be determined, that he had another son, Grzegorz, born. ok. 1713 year and Jan born. right. ok. 1716.

b) Boronów - line of Jan (b. right. ok. 1690)
9 May 1720 Anna, daughter of Jan Bula and Magdalena, was baptized. This is the oldest record concerning the children of this couple that has been preserved in the record books in Boronów. Based on the information from the marriage records can be determined, that he also had a daughter, Jadwiga, born. ok. 1715 year.

c) Boronów – line of Wojciech/Adalbert (b. right. ok. 1699)
The first child of Wojciech/Adalbert and Maria was Wojciech/Adalbert, who was baptized 23 April 1724 year in the parish of Boronów.

d) Boronów - line of Szymon (b. right. ok. 1701)
Szymon Bula and Zofia Kulik got married 21 October 1726 year in the parish of Boronów, and their first child was Jacob the baptized 16 July 1727 year.

e) Boronów - line of Antoni (b. right. ok. 1705)
The first child of Antoni Bula and Maria Frania was Maria, who was baptized 18 June 1730 year in the parish of Boronów.

f) Boronów – Wawrzyniec/Laurentego line (b. ok. 1707)
Wawrzyniec/Laurenty and Maria Gomoluch got married 23 October 1730 year in the parish of Boronów.

g) Boronów-Doły – line of Tomasz (b. ok. 1721)
Tomasz Bula and widow Maria Litwin got married 27 April 1744 year in the parish of Boronów. Their first child was baptized Mary 1 February 1745 year.

Most probably all Bulls from Boronów are related and come from a common ancestor. However, older record books have not been preserved in the parish of Boronów, than these, that were founded in 1719 year. This makes it impossible to link the listed lines of the Bulla families using traditional genealogy methods.

The Bulla/Bula family in the parish of Sadów

In the record books of neighboring parishes you can also find representatives of the Bulla (Bula) families. In the parish of Sadów, as well as in Boronów, in the 18th century there were several families with this surname. They form at least four lines derived from the following pairs:

a) Widulińskie near Cieszowa – line of Sebastian (b. ok. 1653)
According to the marriage record from the parish registers in Sadowo 23 January 1678 In 2008, the widower Sebastian Bula from Widulinski married Anna Grzyb. Their first child was baptized Agnes 31 of December 1678 year.

b) Harbułtowice - the line of Jerzy (b. ok. 1688)
The first child of Jerzy Bula and Ewa, whose baptism certificate was found was Marianna. She was baptized 6 June 1713 year in the parish of Sadów.

c) Olszyna – line of Krzysztof (b. ok. 1703)
Krzysztof Bula and Zofia Pomykała got married 8 July 1728 year in the parish of Sadów. Their first child was baptized Martin 8 November 1728 year.

Błażej Bula and Marianna Pomykała got married 18 January 1767 year in the parish of Sadów. Their first child was baptized Simon 20 October 1768 year.

In addition, in the record books of the Sadów parish, you can find single records of people with the surname Bulla (Bula), however, it is difficult to combine them into complete families, as is the case with the pairs mentioned above. E.g 10 July 1693 Małgorzata and Anna were baptized, daughters of Szymon Bula and Gertruda from Cieszowa. Some records refer to people living outside the Sadów parish, such as baptized 8 of August 1695 Marianna, daughter of Wojciech Bula and Anna from Boronów.

Pawonków - line of Andrzej (b. ok. 1759)

In the eighteenth century, the name of Bull also appears in the record books of the Pawonków parish. At the end of the 18th century, Andrzej Bulla, a farmer, lived in Skrzydłowice (b. ok. 1759) with his wife Zofia Polok (b. ok. 1764). They got married 9 February 1783 in the parish of Pawonków.

Lubsza

In the eighteenth century in the record books of the Lubsza parish under the date 26 April 1726 Marianna is baptized, daughters of Marcin Bula and Zofia from Ligota. Again the name appears 15 July 1749 year at Jacob's baptism, son of Tomasz Bula and Helena from Ligota. The couple had three more children, whereas 20 February 1756 the baptism of Maciej Bula appears, son of Antoni and Marianna. After this period, the name Bula/Bulla disappears from the record books of the Lubsza parish for a long time.

The Bull lineage in genetic research

Bull family genetic tree

As it has already been mentioned, it is not possible to combine all Bull/Bou lines using traditional genealogy methods. It also does not allow to determine whether people with the surname Bulla who have their roots outside the Lubliniec region are related to those from Boronów or Sadów. The solution to this problem is provided by the tools offered by genetic genealogy. It allows you to reliably determine whether two men with a given surname are related to each other and when their common ancestor lived.

Y chromosome studies have shown, that the line Derived from Wawrzyniec (Laurentego) Bulli belongs to haplogroup I1 (M253) and to the subclade I-L1242. Within the framework of the latter one can also distinguish the subclade I-S19914, to which one more representative of the Bull family belongs, coming from Błażej Bulla of Sadow, living in the middle of the eighteenth century. Based on previous genetic studies, it is possible to determine z 95% confidence interval, that a common ancestor was born between 1050, a 1800 year. However, taking into account historical facts, this period can be narrowed down immediately. Probably not possible, so that the name Bula/Bulla was formed earlier, than in the sixteenth century, and genealogical research based on record documents exclude kinship later, than in the seventeenth century. Therefore, it seems accurate that the Yfull portal estimates the date of birth of the common ancestor at approx 1575 year.
