    I post a similar request on a Facebook group but had no response. I need help with finding records of my grandmother Waleska/Valeria Buchcik born Raschka. All I have is my father’s notes about her birthdate, 23 Nov 1896 in Hindenburg O.S., Preußen now Zabrze, Śląskie and Hermann Josef Buchcik, my grandfather’s church record of birth, 24.11.1893, showing the marriage on 8 Nov 1916 in Załęże/Zalenze, on FamilySearch and here. I can find no other evidence of her. Any pointers to where I could find her birth record or marriage?

    Hi Gabriela,

    Yes, I know and have this record. This is the civil record of my great grandfather’s marriage, he died of wounds in the Great War.

    I will look into the other church records that you suggest, the churches of St. Francis and John the Baptist. I had looked at the marriage records for all the churches;
    Zaborze, Sankt Franziskus, Zaborze, Sankt Johannes Biskupitz, Zabrze, Sankt Andreas and
    Zabrze, Sankt Anna without success. So I might try the births, as well.

    Thanks for the help.
    Robert

    Gabriela,

    No, she is definitely a Raschka. Here’s what I received from Poland, an abridged copy of the birth record of my father. Would an unaabridged birth record reveal more information?

    As the wedding took place in Załęże, it can be assumed that the bride’s family lived there. In the years around 1880-1900, children with a surname Raschka are born in Załęże, but Valeska or Valeria are not listed in the index. Perhaps she was born away or in the hospital in other place, although that was rare at the time.

    As for civil status records – yes, there is a bit more information in the full record. But if you do not need a document with official legal force, ask for a unconfirmed scan or an photocopy of a page with act from the registry office book, there are often notes in the margins, etc.

    As I wrote, first obtain a marriage certificate from the archives in Katowice.

    From Herman’s church birth certificate it appears that he had a second wife, widow Wiktoria Nowak née Tonak, married in 1952 in Czerwionka-Leszczyny. Do you know when and where Valeska Buchczik née Raschka died?

    Pozdrawiam Bogusław.
