I read the Wiktionary article on the Proto-Slavic ending -Ota and it offers up an example: *junъ (“young”) → *junota (“youth”). My mind wonders if they are possibly related.

Sorry to revive an 8 year old thread, but was it always the case that Smiths, Millers etc were free people? Did this mean that they were or weren’t required to work '[Number] tag zu fuss’ (Number of days per week working on the Lord’s fields)? I am also interested to know what the relationship of the kammerleute were to the other status types, did they in some cases manage farms for the owner?

From what you’ve said, it seems that the 1844 date is correct. Don’t get tripped up by the death record, because these are naturally more likely to be in error – as a relative fills it in (often without ever meeting the parents). I had one record where the mother of one person was listed as 'Rosalie’, when her name was actually Marianna, and the father was listed as 'Johann’ when it was actually Joseph! It seems that this could be the case for you. There are more possible reasons for error of course: they are grieving so their brains aren’t working right, could’ve used middle names and that they could’ve named their own parents even.
